Help Children Learn the Book of Judges with A Sequencing Relay: An Interactive Teaching Aid

A lot of children’s ministry curriculum hits the big stories, but a full understanding of the narrative of Scripture is important. Some books and concepts are easier to teach than others. But, with a little bit of intentionality, you can make just about anything fun and interactive. Even the cycle of apostasy that the Israelites went through.

Apostasy is defined as “the formal abandonment, renunciation, or turning away from a previously held religious faith, belief system, or cause.”

The cycle of apostasy is the period of time when the Israelites stopped following God and would be punished by God. They would then cry out to God for deliverance, and when He would save them, they’d follow God again… for a time. Over and over, this cycle repeated. God would raise up and send a judge to help His people.

It’s an important period in history to learn about, with many applications for our lives today. And a sequencing relay is a great and fun way to teach it to kids.

When teaching on the cycle of apostacy the Israelites were caught in, an interactive teaching technique is helpful – like a sequencing relay. When kids are active participants in lesson time, they both listen better and remember more of what they hear. This is especially helpful when teaching unfamiliar words or big concepts. We want kids to engage during lesson time so that faith formation happens.

Ready to teach your kids in an interactive way that they will ask to do again and again? Follow the relay below!

Sequencing Relay Activity

Mark spots on the floor, one for each station. Children will go through the stations doing the motions at each spot. Have them repeat it over and over, just like the Israelite’s cycle repeated.

  1. The Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord. Rub your hands together in an evil, greedy way.
  2. God would punish them. Freeze like you’re blocking your face from being hit.
  3. The Israelites would cry out to God for deliverance. Make praying hands to God.
  4. When God delivered the people from their oppression, they followed Him again. Give a double thumbs up.
