The ManCo and The WomanCo Family Discipleship Groups

What is The ManCo and The WomanCo?

The Man Co. and The Woman Co. is a small group gathering for fathers and sons and for mothers and daughters to help one another become mature men and women who know, love, and serve Christ. The focus is on biblical growth, essential manhood and womanhood skills, incredible food, and outrageous fun. The ManCo helps sons embrace and become biblical men and The WomanCo helps daughters grow up to be biblical women, so everything that is done is designed toward this end goal. Groups rotate between homes and the fathers or mothers share leadership of the group, so the time commitment outside of weekly meetings is manageable. Each group is managed and led by the parents in that group. The beauty of The ManCo and The WomanCo is that it provides a family discipleship plan, a map, the framework, and the resources to accomplish it.

The ManCo and The WomanCo family discipleship groups were established in 2021 by a group of parents that wanted a family discipleship option that allowed them to be the primary influence in a child’s life. The parents wanted something that helped them spend critical discipleship hours with children during their formative years to help them learn and live the principles of the Bible, shape them into godly men and women who love Jesus, and develop a strong parent and child relationship. A family discipleship group enables parents not to outsource the discipleship of their children or delegate their role to the church. The ManCo and The WomanCo has been an incredible blessing for many families and it can be for yours as well.

A Means to Disciple our Sons and Daughters

There are many opportunities for other people to minister to your children, but The ManCo and The WomanCo equips parents to directly disciple their children.

God has given parents, specifically fathers, the role of discipling children. A father/son or mother/daughter family discipleship group is a practical way for parents to obey God’s command to raise our children in the instruction and discipline of the Lord (Eph. 6:4), to provide children a biblical vision and model for manhood and womanhood, and provide parents a setting to help their child grow deeper in their faith, intentionally establish friendships, be mentored by like-minded adults, and have fun together in Christian community.

Why Start a ManCo or WomanCo Family Discipleship Group?

“And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers” (Malachi 4:6).

“Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness. Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled. Likewise, urge the younger men to be self-controlled” (Titus 2:2-6).

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God” (Colossians 3:16).

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise” (Deuteronomy 6:5-7).

“For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off” (Acts 2:39).

“We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done. He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers to teach to their children, that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children, so that they should set their hope in God
and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments” (Psalm 78:4-7).

“Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching” (Proverbs 1:8).

Meeting in Homes and A Community of Godly Adults

One of the greatest blessings is the community of godly friendships that develops for the parents as well as the sons and daughters.

Unfortunately, many dads don’t spend much time with other men in quality and long-lasting relationships and many teenage boys don’t have quality friends. After all, fathers are working hard all day, then get home and focus on their family and it leaves little time for gathering with other men. It’s hard for many fathers to justify a regular commitment separate from their family that takes them away from the home. But a father and son group is the best of both worlds where friendships with godly men are developed while fathers disciple their sons! The same is true often for mothers!

Sons and daughters are blessed to learn from the example, wisdom, and life experiences of the other men in the father/son group and women in the mother/daughter group. They are exhorted to holiness, warned about poor life choices, taught invaluable life lessons, and learned how to study God’s Word. To become a godly man it helps to be around other godly men. To become a wise woman it helps to be around other wise women. The ManCo and The WomanCo provides the opportunity for other men/women to have a Titus 2 influence on our children and model what it looks like to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness.

Studying God’s Word Together

The childhood and teen years are the time when individuals will acquire the good or bad habits they will have the rest of their lives. J.C. Ryle correctly observed the force of habits in life and reminds us why the child and young adult years are so important:

“Habits have long roots. Sin, once allowed to nestle in your bosom, will not be turned out at your bidding. Custom becomes second nature, and its chains are threefold cords not easily broken. Well says the prophet, ‘Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots? Then may ye also do good, that are accustomed to do evil’ (Jer. 13:23). Habits are like stones rolling downhill—the further they roll, the faster and more ungovernable is their course. Habits, like trees, are strengthened by age. A boy may bend an oak, when it is a sapling—a hundred men cannot root it up, when it is a full-grown tree. . . . So it is with habits: the older the stronger—the longer they have held possession, the harder they will be to cast out.”(J.C. Ryle, Thoughts for Young Men (Moscow: Charles Nolan Publishers, 2002), 12.)

One of the habits we want our sons and daughters to develop is a personal quiet time studying God’s Word daily. Studying the Bible as a group trains them to study the Bible as an individual and it allows us to discuss critical topics with our children such as providing guidance on sound doctrine and thinking about social issues from a biblical perspective.

The weekly rhythm of a The ManCo and The WomanCo is to study the Bible as a group twice a month, which works out to every other week. Groups study through entire books of the Bible, chapter-by-chapter and verse-by-verse. The group typically covers one chapter per study, which is a manageable pace for everyone. We encourage parents to purchase a Bible dictionary, Bible commentary, and Bible concordance and give these study tools to each son and daughter in the fall. These tools are used to study the Bible each week and trains children how to study the Bible as well as how to use reference material.

Essential Manhood and Womanhood Skills, Fun,
and Food

Once a month the focus of the weekly gathering is on teaching the boys/girls an essential manhood/womanhood skill that will help them grow up into a mature, godly man/woman.

It’s a nice change-of-pace from expositional study of the Bible, provides experiential learning, and leverages the strengths of each parent. The sample list of essential manhood and womanhood skills includes the following areas: money management, how to budget and invest; interview skills, how to write a resume and how to interview for a job; common etiquette; how to tie a tie; how to cut hair; how to choose a date; simple car maintenance; how to change a tire and the oil; nutrition; and how to handle and shoot a gun. For a broader list with resources and teaching points, see the book 50 Things Every Child Needs to Know Before Leaving Home.

Groups have a lot of fun together and once a month they plan a fun evening. The fun events include bowling, a cribbage night, snow tubing, disc golf, Favorite Things Christmas Party where we exchanged gifts, Bigger and Better party, end of year party grilling out, and a father and son campout. Most groups eat a meal together each week, but this is not required. Whoever hosts also provides food. Since many fathers/mothers are coming straight from work and some of our sons/daughters are coming from afternoon commitments, the meal is helpful and allows groups to begin each gathering with conversation around great food.

Joining the Circle of Men
and Women

It is an arduous journey to reach manhood and womanhood. Becoming a mature adult is highly ambiguous in our culture.

Compared with other societies, ours is short on activities or milestones that mark the arrival of maturity and manhood or womanhood. In addition, manhood and womanhood is in a state of confusion today. Society no longer knows what a man/woman is or how a man/woman acts.

What is the manhood image that the culture gives us? Feminized culture, indecisive guys, lovers of adrenaline, and weak or passive men. Many boys do not have a compelling vision of what it means to be a godly man. What is the womanhood image that society communicates? Feminism, anti-child, anti-family, and androgenized culture. Many girls do not have a biblical vision of what it means to be a godly woman.

In our generation, a quiet crisis has taken place for young people that has teenagers arriving at the doorstep of manhood or womanhood who are not prepared to launch well. The Man Co. and Woman Co. help to change all of that. Parents, here is an opportunity for you to step up and take leadership to disciple your child by being actively engaged in your son or daughter’s life, have high expectations, and raise him or her to maturity in Christ. The Man Co. and The Woman Co. is our way of discipling our sons and daughters in a community of godly men/women studying God’s Word together and training them with essential manhood/womanhood skills while having fun and eating great food. Maybe it will be for you as well!

“When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways.”

1 Corinthians 13:11

How to Establish a Group

  • Approach 1-2 moms or dads and invite them to help provide leadership to a group.

  • Form a group, either by invitation or sign-up. A total of 4-8 families is the ideal size.

  • A one-year commitment is encouraged with regular attendance. Most groups take the summer months off.

  • Agree to host in your home, if possible. Rotate homes each week.

  • Willingness to teach or facilitate group study, discussion, or lead a skill night.

  • A wide variety of ages welcome!

  • Notify us that you are starting a group. We will provide you with a Getting Started Guide, digital files of The ManCo and The WomanCo logos, and any support needed to launch and run your group.

Frequently Asked Questions

There is very little cost, other than purchasing a Bible study (we have many available in our store that were created specifically for The ManCo and The WomanCo) and any expenses you will incur for food or activities.

Each group can decide what day of the week and what time they meet. Most groups choose a midweek evening, such as Tuesday or Wednesday, and meet for two hours from 6:30-8:30p.

Any age child can participate. We have groups that consist of younger families, so the Bible study and activities fit that age best. We have groups that consist of mostly middle and high school students as well. The beauty of these groups is that you can tailor the group to your children, rather than having a mass education, factory discipleship mold that you have to fit into.

The ManCo and The WomanCo is not a drop-off ministry, so participation by a parent with a child is the expected norm. We allow children to attend when they have a non-Christian parent, come from a divorced home, or have a parent who has neglected or abandoned a child spiritually. We have boys in our group who are from a single-parent home and do not have a godly father-figure in their life. We consider these children spiritual orphans who are in need of the body of Christ and a Christian family to love them and invest in them.
